I was stationed at Cook Barracks from April 1971 to April 1972. Because I had just arrived I was “volunteered" to stand during the change from the 4th Armored Division to the 1st. I was naive enough to think it was a privilege at the time. I remember when I arrived it was still cold and many folks kept food on the outside of the window sills. Being from Los Angeles, I had never seen people store food like that. I also remember that the busses were more modern in Germany than the smoke-belching ones I was familiar with in LA. The 501st Admin Co. was housed in the large building at the edge of the post and living there reminded me of a college dorm complete with drinking games, card games, playing Frisbee in the halls (an early version of Ultimate Frisbee). The food was mostly OK except on weekends when the famous “Green Weenies” appeared again and again on the menu. My duty sergeant was a nice fellow named Willis A. Rizer, but everyone called him by his initials, WAR. He always spoke of getting out and liked to party with us enlisted/draftees, so I was very disappointed when he announced that he signed up for another 6-year hitch. He had a family and probably needed the money. My friends included Mick (Ehrlinborn) from Chicago (his real name wasn’t that, but we called him Mick because people said he looked like Mick Jagger. Other friends included Mike (?) Mulkey from South Dakota, Louis Hernandez from Dallas, Dave or Bob (?) Decker from Wisconsin who played some of the fastest games of checkers with me. I guess after a few moves we got bored and both wanted to finish as soon as possible. I worked at the personnel office for a while sending various kinds of orders out to the outposts of the division. All the folks who worked there were great. Even though I had some disagreements with the duty officer, we never took our differences elsewhere. Sorry for that punch Lt. Mike Manning or was it Mike Manion (?). After that incident I ended my tour of Cook Barracks and the Army working at the Service Club, which may have been one of the best jobs anyone could have. No uniforms, show up at 11 am, organize pool tournaments and concert trips. Halfway through my job there the 1st Armored Division moved out to Ansback or some place like that, but since I was a short timer (less than 90 days), they left me behind with the 1st Infantry Division. Naturally, they had no idea what to do with me so I just went about my business without having to interact with any officers or NCO’s. I was finally discharged in April 1972, 19 months and 7 days after my induction and returned to LA, when I enrolled in college and became a Geologist.

Comments: I was stationed at Cooke's Barracks with the 4th Armored Div., 504th Admin. Co. between September 1964 and July 1966. I served as a 1st cook, Mess #1, under Master Sergeant Virgil Smith. I had the opportunity not only to see Bavaria but Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain as well. To this day the beauty of the landscapes I witnessed and the friendships I made with fellow soldiers and the natives are some of the best memories I'll ever remember.
A part time musician before I entered the service, soon after I arrived at Cooke's I met several members of the 4th Armored Div. Band and shortly thereafter joined a quintet, booked by Sergeant Tom Dooley (Yes, that was his real name) assistant to the 4th AD Band Master Sergeant Armand Guarneiri (One of the finest people I have ever met in my entire life) played the circuit of EM and NCO clubs in the Gӧppengen, Schwӓbisch Gmünd area. A great time in my life!

Comments: My family lived in Göppingen from 1963 to 1966.I went to the annex school (elementary grades) behind the MP station. My teacher was Miss Janice Egger. My best friend was Vicky McMullin. Mr. Theodore Toews was a music teacher in the high school who wrote “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in common English and wrote music for it. We performed it in town and got a good review. (Well, who is going to disappoint children and teachers?!) I played Puck. An MP “Taylor” used to take pictures of us. I have a few to share. Would like to know where he is these days. Anyone out there remember me? Let’s get in touch.

Served at Cooke Barracks from 82 -85 and ran the MP Customs Detachment there along with Brian & Sandy Smock. Remember winning the July 4th 1983 softball tournament and had to beat C Co. 4/16 twice to win it all. We had MP's from the platoon, CID, and Customs on the team and I had the good fortune to coach them. Retired from the Army after 23 years and being in Goeppingen was surely one of the highlights of my career.

Comments: Wow, this is Awesome. I have been looking for guy's that I was in Germany with. My wife just stumbled accross this site, many thanks to the gentleman who put this together. I was stationed at Cooke Barracks, with the 573rd S&S Co and then later 299th from 1981 to 1984. My wife Kim was there with me, we lived off post in Kuchen and later my son Jesse was born there, at 5th General Hospital in Sttugart. I don't know where to start, I have so many great memories of planet Geoppingen. As far as the Army goes the people that I dealt with when I first got there 1sgt Smith, Capt. Falavolita were nothing but professional and exemplified what the Army was all about and I want to thank you . My Room mate, before I moved off post, Mariano Lanza, you were my best friend, every time I think of you I laugh. My squad leader, Ezra Graham, you put up with my attitude and helped me get my stuff together. There are alot of other people that meant alot to my wife and I, on the big Holidays we made it a point to have some of the guy's over, that meant alot to us and I hope to hear form some of you. Comments: A close personal friend, prior to the Army, who I also served with later at Cooke Barracks just told me about this website and I was stunned to know it existed after all these years. I was a medic (SP/4) in C Co. 1/26 - Blue Spaders - 1st IDF - Big Red 1 from early '79 to about July of '80. I flew Dustoff in the states at Fort Sill (4th flight platoon/507th Medical Group) - tried to get into a medevac unit in Germany but ended up as an infantry medic in the 1/26th - can't beat that with a stick.
So far, I've seen three people in these posts that I know and have contacted two of them. Although it has been 30+ years since being there, I still have some fond memories of my time there.
Some names I remember in the 1/26 - Dennis Cade, Jim Minor, Glen Ogle, George Thomson, John Herrod, Gary Simpson, John Emrich, Steve Seiferman, Bob Brassard, Jeff Fram, Craig Sheffield, Dave McConnell, Doug Cooke, Mark Cluster, Jim Zenor, Tom Boone, Dewayne Crowell, Jim Fullenkamp, Patrick Weaver, Dennis Yarosz.
Went to the NCO Academy in Bad Tolz and then TDY to the base hospital in Augsburg during my last three months at Cooke. Hated the alerts and tolerated the field only because the medics had the heated Tracks. Loved the beer, especially out of Das Boot.
I remember a german fraulin (sp?) named Petra - boy could that girl party. I also remember another german party girl named Pia. Another fond memory was Jack's Gasthaus in Eisligen. I remember being helped back to the barracks many a time after leaving that party palace.
Glen Ogle, George Thomson and myself took a little vacation to Amsterdam one time. That was a naughty, but fun place to visit. Went to a bar there called "The Other Place" - run by a bunch of retired Hell's Angels bikers from California -- will never forget that trip.
It was fun to to go back and remember some good times. If somebody out there remembers me, send an email, I'd love to hear from you.
As you were......Brian

Lived in temp housing at Leipheim, dad had to commute to Cooke Bks on a daily basis. Attended school at Ulm at the time and met my wife of 45 years there.
Spent a lot of time at AYA and played baseball, basket ball, and American football at the local Sportsplatz. Also spent a lot of time with Jurgen at the "Candy shop" partaking of steinhager, rauchputzen and boiler makers. Had some good times during faschen at the Sieben Schwabben and other establishments in downtown Goppingen.
